Compound Films is moving its headquarters out of Downtown Austin and back to Downtown Houston.

And this time, we’re coming home with a much bigger vision.

The Austin chapter was important. It gave Compound Films new relationships, new experiences and a broader perspective on Texas’ rapidly changing creative economy.

But Compound Films isn’t the same company it was when it established itself in Austin.

The company has grown.

The projects have grown.

The ambitions have grown.

And now, with film projects, documentaries, comedy productions, branded entertainment and original content moving into the next stage of development, Compound Films believes its headquarters belongs in Houston.

Not because Austin is going away.

Because Houston is coming.

WHY HOUSTON? WHY NOW?

That’s the question we’re expecting people to ask.

Why leave Downtown Austin?

Why return to Houston?

Why make this move now?

The answer is simple:

The opportunity has changed.

For years, Austin has carried the reputation of being Texas’ creative capital.

And for good reason.

Austin has built an incredible ecosystem around film, music, comedy, festivals and independent creators.

But Texas is too big for there to be only one creative center.

Dallas has its own entertainment ecosystem.

San Antonio has its own creative identity.

Fort Worth is developing major production infrastructure.

And Houston?

Houston may be entering one of the most interesting entertainment periods in its history.

Compound Films wants to be positioned at the center of it.

HOUSTON’S FILM INDUSTRY IS CHANGING

Houston has always had the ingredients to become a major production city.

What has been missing is not necessarily talent.

It isn’t stories.

It isn’t locations.

It isn’t audiences.

It’s been scale and sustained infrastructure.

That is beginning to change.

The Houston Film Commission now provides production resources including location databases, cast and crew directories, permitting assistance, local production connections and incentive guidance.

Houston also now has its own Feature Film Incentive Program, designed specifically to attract narrative feature films and scripted television series to the region.

The program can provide a rebate equal to 10% of approved Houston-area spending, up to $100,000 per qualifying project.

And that’s happening at the same time Texas is significantly expanding its own production incentives.

The Texas Moving Image Industry Incentive Program can provide qualifying productions with cash grants based on eligible Texas expenditures, with additional awards potentially bringing the total incentive to as much as 31% under the program’s requirements.

For production companies, those aren’t just numbers.

They’re signals.

Texas wants productions here.

And Houston wants them too.

THE NEXT FILM CAPITAL OF TEXAS?

We’re not going to pretend somebody has officially handed Houston a crown.

But here’s the question:

What happens if Houston becomes the next major film production hub in Texas?

Compound Films wants to be part of the answer.

Houston has an enormous advantage that filmmakers can spend millions trying to recreate:

diversity of locations.

Downtown skyscrapers.

Historic neighborhoods.

Industrial areas.

Luxury developments.

Suburban communities.

Bayous.

Parks.

Waterfront locations.

The Houston Film Commission itself highlights the region’s combination of urban, suburban, historic, rural and coastal locations as one of its major advantages for filmmakers.

Or somewhere completely fictional.

For producers, that flexibility matters.

Recent reporting from the Houston Chronicle describes a major revival of Houston’s stand-up comedy scene, with new clubs rebuilding an ecosystem that had once been anchored by the legendary Laff Stop.

The state has also established a Media Production Development Zone program intended to encourage permanent moving-image production infrastructure in Texas.

And Houston has created its own local incentive program on top of that.

That’s important.

“Can Texas attract productions?”

“Which Texas cities are going to capture the next wave?”

Compound Films believes Houston deserves a seat at that table.

The next major independent film could be produced in Houston.
